Tribunal's Prof Fiona Tregenna re-appointed for second term

Prof Fiona Tregenna was re-appointed as a part-time member of the Competition Tribunal for a second term, with effect from 1 April 2019.

She obtained her Ph.D. in Economics from Cambridge University, UK, and her Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, USA. She currently holds the DST/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development (SARChI Industrial Development) and is also a Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg. In the past Fiona has taught at universities and has worked in research, policy and consulting, both in South Africa and abroad. She sits on the Boards of several institutions, has served on various panels and bodies and has advised national and international organisations.

Her research has been published in prestigious international journals and also as chapters in a number of books. Fiona acts as a reviewer for various national and international journals. She has presented her research at conferences around the world. The primary area of her research is the sectoral structure of economies and the changes therein, in relation to growth, with a particular focus on deindustrialisation and related issues. Other areas of research have included poverty, inequality and unemployment. She has received several awards for her research and is an elected member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).

Within the competition field, in 1997/1009 Fiona took part in the NEDLAC negotiations leading up to the promulgation of the current Competition Act. As a Teaching Fellow at the University of Cambridge she covered various topics in competition economics and industrial organisation. She has published in the field of industrial organisation.
